Trump promises not to build a Trump tower (like this) in Greenland

U.S. President Donald Trump may be serious about his proposition to buy Greenland, but has assured residents that he has no plans to build his signatory Trump tower there.

On Monday night, Trump tweeted an edited picture of a tall, shiny Trump tower looking ridiculously out-of-place as it looms over a small village in the Arctic territory. “I promise not to do this to Greenland!” he wrote as a caption.

The tweet came a day after he acknowledged he was “strategically” interested in a deal but it’s not a top priority.

The president’s lighthearted approach to the matter could be to appease the Danish president Mette Frederiksen who, earlier this week, issued a stern response that the island was not for sale and that the very idea of selling it was absurd.

“It’s an absurd discussion, and (Greenland prime minister) Kim Kielsen has of course made it clear that Greenland is not for sale. That’s where the conversation ends,” Frederiksen told Danish broadcaster DR.

Greenland residents appear to share the same view. “I think he’s [Trump] crazy,” one told CBS views, while another said, “It feels as if he’s very patronising. It’s stupid.”

Trump’s son Eric posted the same photo of the tower on his Instagram earlier on Monday. “I don’t know about you guys but I love the concept of buying Greenland.”
