Nate Bargatze is one of our favorite comedians working today, if you aren’t yet familiar with him you can start with his latest Netflix special The Tennessee Kid, which was just released. Or, you can actually start with any of his albums, Comedy Central presents, specials, late night appearances, or Netflix half hour really. All of his material is killer.

Bargatze’s talents are hopefully going to reach a broader audience as ABC has just ordered an off-cycle pilot order from the comedian. For the last few months Bargatze has been working with the creators of The Carmichael Show – Jerrod Carmichael, Ari Katcher, and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel to develop a sitcom that would star Bargatze. The trio and Bargatze’s writing partner Dan Shaki originally had the show set up at FOX for the 2017-18 season but when that pilot did not move forward, ABC expressed interest because they wanted to work with Carmichael and their recent success with middle class-leaning comedies of late and the project moved there last summer.

The show description closely resembles Nate’s real life when he chose to leave the city and head home to Tennessee to raise his daughter.

Follows Nate and his wife, who choose to move from California to Nate’s native Tennessee, where his parents still live, to raise their 6-year-old daughter. They find the pursuit of a simple life to be much more complicated than they imagined.

Executive producing the pilot are Bargatze, Carmichael, Sanchez-Witzel, who will serve as showrunner, Goddard and Brillstein’s Tim Sarkes and Alex Murray.
